20 Chinese Cultivation Words You’ll Hear in Donghua (With Pinyin)

· Alexandrite Software, the makers of Tingdu · 8 minute read

You know 你好 and 谢谢, you can order noodles, and then you put on a cultivation donghua and understand almost nothing. The characters are talking about energy, realms, cores and tribulations. None of that is in a textbook, yet it comes back in every episode.

Cultivation stories are a big part of Chinese fantasy. In xianxia (仙侠, “immortal heroes”) and related genres, people train body and spirit for years to grow stronger, live longer and, in the end, become immortal. The genre has its own vocabulary, and a small set of words carries most of the plot. Learn them and you start to catch what is happening, even when the rest of the sentence is still too fast.

Below are 20 of those words, grouped the way they come up in the stories, each with pinyin, a meaning, a short note and an example sentence. If you want to go straight to practice, jump to the wordset: you can play every word, practise them and save them, free and without an account.

People and sects

A cultivator rarely walks alone. Most belong to a 宗门, a sect: a school with its own mountain, leaders, disciples, secret methods and old rivalries. Inside the sect, the person who teaches you is your 师父, a word that mixes “teacher” and “father”, and the bond lasts for life. Cultivators who meet on the road and don’t know each other stay polite and call each other 道友, “fellow Daoist”, often just before a fight.

宗门 zōngmén Sect
A cultivation school or organisation with its own leaders, disciples, methods and rivals.
我想加入这个宗门。
Wǒ xiǎng jiārù zhège zōngmén.
I want to join this sect.
师父 shīfu Master / teacher
A teacher who is also a kind of parent figure. Don't confuse it with 师傅, pronounced the same, a polite word for a skilled worker such as a driver or a cook.
师父,我错了。
Shīfu, wǒ cuò le.
Master, I was wrong.
道友 dàoyǒu Fellow Daoist
Literally “friend of the Way”: a polite way for cultivators to address each other, especially strangers from another sect.
这位道友,请留步。
Zhè wèi dàoyǒu, qǐng liúbù.
Fellow Daoist, please wait a moment.

Cultivation and spiritual energy

The heart of every story is 修炼, cultivating. The world is full of 灵气, spiritual energy, and cultivators draw it in and turn it into their own 灵力, spiritual power. How well they can do that often depends on their 灵根, an inborn spiritual root, and on the 功法, the cultivation method they follow. When a big step is close, a cultivator goes into 闭关, secluded cultivation, and may not come out for months or years.

修炼 xiūliàn Cultivation / training
In everyday Chinese 修炼 means to train or discipline yourself. In cultivation stories it is the long practice of training body and spirit to gain power and a longer life.
他每天早上都在山上修炼。
Tā měitiān zǎoshang dōu zài shān shang xiūliàn.
He cultivates on the mountain every morning.
灵气 língqì Spiritual energy
Outside fantasy, 灵气 can describe a clever or lively quality in a person. In cultivation stories it is the energy of heaven and earth that cultivators draw in.
这座山的灵气很浓。
Zhè zuò shān de língqì hěn nóng.
The spiritual energy on this mountain is very dense.
灵力 línglì Spiritual power
Many series use 灵气 for the energy around you and 灵力 for the power a cultivator holds and spends, but the line between them varies.
他的灵力用完了。
Tā de línglì yòng wán le.
He has used up his spiritual power.
灵根 línggēn Spiritual root
In the series that use it, a spiritual root is an inborn talent that decides whether, and how fast, someone can cultivate.
她的灵根很好。
Tā de línggēn hěn hǎo.
She has an excellent spiritual root.
功法 gōngfǎ Cultivation method
A technique or manual for cultivating, often written down and fiercely guarded. 练 (liàn) is the verb for practising it.
这本功法很难练。
Zhè běn gōngfǎ hěn nán liàn.
This cultivation method is very hard to practise.
闭关 bìguān Secluded cultivation
Literally “to close the gate”. People also use it jokingly for shutting themselves away to study or work.
师父在闭关,谁也不见。
Shīfu zài bìguān, shéi yě bú jiàn.
Master is in secluded cultivation and won't see anyone.

Realms and breakthroughs

Power is measured in 境界, realms or levels. Training slowly fills a realm, and moving up to the next one is a 突破, a breakthrough. Many series follow a ladder that starts with 筑基 (Foundation Establishment), then 金丹 (Golden Core) and 元婴 (Nascent Soul). A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality (凡人修仙传) is a well-known example.

The ladder is not universal, though. Every author builds their own system, with different names, orders and numbers of stages; Perfect World (完美世界), for example, uses realm names of its own. So treat the words here as common building blocks, not as the rules of every story.

Higher up, the stakes change. To advance, a cultivator may have to 渡劫, survive a heavenly tribulation, often shown as lightning striking from the sky. Surviving the last trials leads to 飞升, ascension: leaving the mortal world for a higher one. Training, breaking through, surviving a tribulation and ascending are four different steps, and the dialogue keeps them apart.

境界 jìngjiè Cultivation realm / level
In everyday Chinese 境界 is a level or state, for example of skill or understanding. In cultivation stories it is a named stage of power.
你现在是什么境界?
Nǐ xiànzài shì shénme jìngjiè?
What realm are you at now?
突破 tūpò Breakthrough
An everyday word for a breakthrough, in science or in sport. In cultivation stories it means reaching the next realm.
我要突破了。
Wǒ yào tūpò le.
I'm about to break through.
筑基 zhùjī Foundation Establishment
Literally “to build the foundation”. An early realm in many series, but not in all of them.
他三年就筑基了。
Tā sān nián jiù zhùjī le.
He reached Foundation Establishment in just three years.
金丹 jīndān Golden Core
Literally “golden elixir”, a term from Daoist inner alchemy. Cultivators “form” it: 结丹 or 结成金丹.
她已经结成了金丹。
Tā yǐjīng jiéchéng le jīndān.
She has already formed her Golden Core.
元婴 yuányīng Nascent Soul
Literally “original infant”. 期 (qī) means stage, so 元婴期 is the Nascent Soul stage.
元婴期的高手很少见。
Yuányīng qī de gāoshǒu hěn shǎo jiàn.
Experts at the Nascent Soul stage are rare.
渡劫 dùjié Undergo heavenly tribulation
劫 means calamity. A tribulation is a deadly trial, often shown as heavenly lightning, that a cultivator must survive to advance.
他明天要渡劫。
Tā míngtiān yào dùjié.
He will face his heavenly tribulation tomorrow.
飞升 fēishēng Ascension
Literally “to fly up”: leaving the mortal world for a higher one, the final goal in many stories.
她终于飞升了。
Tā zhōngyú fēishēng le.
She finally ascended.

Treasures and adventures

Between the training sessions come the adventures. A 法宝 is a magical treasure, such as a sword, a bell or a mirror with powers of its own, and finding a good one can change a fight. 丹药, pills and elixirs, heal wounds, restore power or help a breakthrough, which is why 炼丹, refining them, is a respected skill. Many arcs begin when a 秘境 opens: a secret realm full of treasures, traps and rival cultivators.

法宝 fǎbǎo Magical treasure
In everyday Chinese 法宝 is also a “secret weapon”: a trick or tool that always works.
这件法宝是师父给我的。
Zhè jiàn fǎbǎo shì shīfu gěi wǒ de.
My master gave me this magical treasure.
丹药 dānyào Medicinal pill / elixir
Pills that heal, restore spiritual power or help a breakthrough. 颗 (kē) is the measure word for small round things.
吃了这颗丹药,伤就好了。
Chī le zhè kē dānyào, shāng jiù hǎo le.
Take this pill and your wounds will heal.
炼丹 liàndān Refining pills / alchemy
Historically, Daoist alchemists tried to make elixirs of long life. In the stories, an alchemist is often as respected as a fighter.
他在房间里炼丹。
Tā zài fángjiān li liàndān.
He is refining pills in his room.
秘境 mìjìng Secret realm
A hidden place, usually open only for a short time, full of treasures and danger. It shares 境 with 境界, but means a place, not a level.
秘境明天开启。
Mìjìng míngtiān kāiqǐ.
The secret realm opens tomorrow.

FAQ

What does “cultivation” mean in Chinese anime?

Cultivation (修炼, xiūliàn) is the long practice of training body and spirit to gain power and a longer life. The idea borrows from Daoist traditions of self-cultivation and inner alchemy, but in donghua it becomes a fantasy system of energy, realms and breakthroughs.

What is the difference between wuxia and xianxia?

Wuxia (武侠, “martial heroes”) tells of martial artists in a mostly human world: sword fights, honour and revenge. Xianxia (仙侠, “immortal heroes”) adds the supernatural: cultivators chase immortality, fly, wield magical treasures and fight beings far beyond human. Cultivation vocabulary like 境界 and 渡劫 belongs to xianxia and the fantasy genres close to it.

Do all cultivation donghua use the same realms?

No. Many share the Foundation Establishment, Golden Core and Nascent Soul steps, but each series defines its own ladder, and some use entirely different names. Learn the shared words, then pick up each show’s own terms as you watch.

How can beginners learn Chinese while watching donghua?

Learn the words before the episode, not during it. Practise a short list like this one for a few minutes, then watch with Chinese subtitles and listen for the words you know. Learn Chinese with the TV series you love shows how to make a word list for any episode with an AI chat and practise it in Tingdu.
